Occupying two blocks in downtown Montreal, the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) is the largest healthcare construction project underway in North America. OHLA Group (OHLA) is a member of the consortium, Collectif Santé Montréal, that’s developing the project under a 38-year contract to design, build, finance and maintain the 3,597,000-square-foot hospital complex. OHLA was also a 50% partner in Construction Santé Montréal, a design-build joint venture that delivered the first phase of the project in 2017.
The hospital complex integrated CHUM teaching hospital network’s Hotel Dieu of Montréal, Hôpital Notre-Dame and Saint-Luc Hospital. The team constructed three buildings on the St. Luc’ campus that house 772 private rooms, 26 specialty outpatient clinics, a critical care unit, 12 linear accelerator bunkers, a burn unit, 39 operating suites, several of which are dedicated rooms for robotic and heart surgery, neurosurgery and transplants. Project scope also included the installation, commissioning, and handover of some 20,000 pieces of medical equipment.
CHUM features 5.6 miles of pneumatic tubing for speedy delivery of drugs, blood samples and other items. Its efficient plumbing fixtures help reduce fresh water consumption by 30%, while its unique HVAC system makes it the only hospital in North America to supply 100% fresh air throughout the buildings.
The design-build joint venture coordinated activities of more than 120 subcontractors and 1,500 workers daily. The team made sure the operations at St. Luc Hospital were not disrupted, and that its emergency department remained accessible. After a six-month handover period, patients began transferring to the new hospital–the hospital’s first baby was born within two hours of opening. Phase 2, currently delivered under separate contract, started with the demolition of St. Luc Hospital to make room for construction of the remaining 15% of the Project—an administration building and a 500-seat amphitheater and conference center.
